2018 High Cut October Issue Interview

High Cut October 2018 - 10 South Korean's Nation Actor about 'My Acting, My Movie'
Doh Kyungsoo “Everytime I ended each of my project, I learned a little bit more about myself”
(2017 Blue Dragon Film Best New Actor Winner ‘Hyung’)

Q. To Actor Doh Kyungsoo, what does the blue dragon award means to you?
A. The rookie award is an award that you can only get one time only, and once again I’m very thankful that I’m given this award. To me this award is….I want to see the meaning as “let’s just continue to work harder”. In the future I will put more effort and work harder to show you a good image.

Q. What is the scene you remember the most from ‘Hyung’ ?
A. There’s this scene where dooyoung who lose his eyesight and filled with fear, who cannot do anything by himself properly, and in the state of having nothing, is running without being able to see with his eyes towards his brother. (This is the scene) where dooyoung finally trust and depend on his brother, it’s a scene where he get rid of his fear and it’s a scene I want to point out.

Q. Let’s shoot a hidden scene for ‘Hyung’ which you won an award for, Dooyoung is now living well right?
A. After overcoming his brother’s death, right now dooyoung is living awesomely as a judo athlete. He also gained another gold medal. Even if he’s living by himself, I think he will be a cool man who is strong and healthy.

Q. From ‘Room Number 7’, ‘Hyung’, until ‘Along With The God’, you would slowly build up emotions and burst it out in moments where it’s really needed rather than expressing emotions grandly. For that you received an acclaim as being experienced, because what you did doesn’t resemble a rookie.
A. ‘Ah, this is where I should build up emotions’ I never acted while having that kind of thought. To be able to act naturally I received a lot of help from people around me. During ‘Along With The Gods’, Director Kim Yongha would gave clear direction on how to act during emotional scene and even just by looking into the director’s eyes, he’s saying ‘kyungsoo-ya, how about we do it like this?’. From those discussions alone I could understand what he wanted. It’s really like a communion between an actor and director? or a signal? I feel it’s like a telepathy where we could feel the same thing, and that amazes me.

Q. An actor and director that have worked with you said ‘Doh Kyungsoo has a very mature personality’, is this personality a secret to your self control?
A. When I received stress, I’m the type to either hide it or suppress it. Since I was born until now, I barely have ever let out an anger, showed an awful emotion, or screamed out. Somehow, I think that personality intersect well with the characters I have played so far. In ‘Cart’ I screamed loud in front of Yumm Junga senior and I never screamed that loud since I was born, it was a first experience. I never know what it feels like to screamed out loud like that and after that I got to know it.

Q. It could also mean that you slowly become more proficient in expressing your emotion.
A. That’s true. Recently, there are also scene where I screamed loudly. During ‘Cart’ I screamed in a bad way and now in the recently filmed drama ‘100 Days Husband’ I worried over how I should I let out my anger. Honestly, the most surprising thing is during ‘It’s Okay It’s Love’. I’m usually not the type to shed a tear but when filming the 16th episode of ‘It’s Okay It’s Love’, I got really into the character and I cried loudly sincerely. It’s not the point of wailing but in my perspective it was a really loud cry. It’s the first time and although it was sad I found it amazing for discovering such emotion. It made me feel good and relieved.

Q. To put it simply, all the characters you have played are dark characters. But in ‘Swing Kids’ which will be released later his year and in your new drama ‘100 Days Husband’, the characters are cheerful right?
A. Originally, I’m a bright person too (laughs). Although I also got hurt unconsciously but basically I joked a lot and have a bright type of personality. Because of the character I played until now, perhaps there are people who didn’t know but of course I have the opposite (of those dark) character inside of me. That’s why in these recent works I acted more comfortably. I thought ‘I finally met this kind of character’ and because there are lots of expression that I cannot show until how, it made acting become enjoyable.

Q. From new movie up to a drama, after this busy fourth quarter, what point have changed the most?
A. Back then I didn’t understand it properly but every time each of my project ended, I feel that I really have developed a lot. After finishing the filming of ‘Swing Kids’ there are a lot of thing that I feel about my acting, and also about myself. I thought I didn’t know myself well, but through doing the project I see sides of myself that I didn’t know and I feel relieved and surprised. Through this round of works too I discovered sides of myself and I hope I could develop one step further.
