Doh Kyungsoo_Roh Kisoo
"What should I say about Roh Kisoo, his personality is wholesome. He has a strong confidence and is very cheerful. It's an entirely new character that I've never shown before."
Q. As soon as you read the scenario, what was your first thought about it?
A. 'I want to do this movie'. I like the image of five youths in Swing Kids who have great passion in dancing despite the difficult reality. I also have high expectation in showing a new side of me. Because Roh Kisoo is a character that is the opposite of the scarred and gloomy character that I have been doing so far.
Q. In the previous High Cut interview you said that "I'm usually playful and have a bright personality". Is this being brought out by this project?
A. I'm really thankful towards the director. Of course I do have that personality in me but those side are brought out to the utmost by the director. What should I say about Roh Kisoo, his personality is wholesome. He has a strong confidence and is very cheerful. He also doesn't have a big mood swings. You'll know if you watch the movie, Kisoo are facing many difficult situations but he naturally let his emotions flow in regards to the situation he's in. I'm the type of person that doesn't let out my anger to other people and I toned it down but when I'm being Kisoo, he would let out his anger and in turn it relieved some stress too.
Q. For this movie, it said that you received a special lesson in tap dancing for five months
A. Except Jared Grimes who is a professional tap dancer, the rest of the actors such as hyesu, minho hyung, jungse hyung, and me are people who doesn't do tap dance so all of us are in the same boat. There are many times when we practiced together but because I have to attend other schedules too, whenever I have a free time I would be practicing by myself continously.
Q. Oh Jungse and Park Hyesu are stiff people (t/n because they don't dance regularly) so they said 'our goal is to follow Doh Kyungsoo'
A. Ey~ (laughs) it's not like that. Beside the group dancing scene there are also scenese where I'm dancing by myself so as I practiced for that it might seem that my body is being used to the difficulty (in the dance). At first it was hard for me too. However since I'm a person that use my body (to work) I think that there are some points that I could do but it's not like that, all about it (tap dancing) is really different.
Q. Are you saying that in regards of tap dancing, everyone is equal?
A. Yes. The four of us are all stiff. Between each other we talked about "ah, so this cannot be done like this". The motion of using your hands while also stomping your feet to the floor is something that is unusual for us to do in out daily life. That's why it was hard to control our upper boddy.
Q. Looking at your face, it seems like you've fallen completely into tap dancing.
A. (because) It's good to release stress on your own. First of all, (tap dancing) is making rhythm on my own. To put it simply, it's like playing a musical instrument with your feet. As we're learning it we all feel its charm. It's a dance that you cannot help but to fall into.
Q. In the middle of the photoshoot today you're also stomping your foot non stop (laughs). Do you have any thoughts about keep doing tap dancing even when the movie has ended?
A. When the filming has ended sometimes when I think about it, I put on my tap dancing shoes and practiced by myself in the company's practice room. Right now when I'm standing still my foot are just keep moving. It's coming out and it's not stopping (laughs).
Q. After spending five months practicing, the five actors cannot be helped but to get closer with each other right?
A. It's not impossible. In real life, their personality is just like their characters which are refreshing and cheerful. Especially Oh Jungse hyung who is the mood maker on the filming set. Whenever Jungse hyung said something, it sounded so funny that we laughed loudly on the set. Thanks to him we have a lot of NG. There are a few scenes that is stuck inside my head and I was scolded for holding back my laughter. It came to the point where we did 10-ish NG.
Q. When you're talking about that moment right now, your face is also full of laughter. What was that scene?
A. It was a scene where I said "you guys do the dancing and leave me out of it" and byeongsam said "but aren't you our dance leader" and persuaded me to do it together. It was a situation where I should feel happy when hearing the word 'dance leader' and gained confidence but I shouldn't show it on my face and have to manage my expression however I keep lauging because jungse hyung is so funny.
Q. In the role of a North Korean soldier, how do you practice for the peculiar accent? The NK accent that we often heard on comedy program are usually being exaggerated so there's a big difference in how it sounded in reality.
A. It's really different. The exaggerated way of speaking are usually used for broadcast purposes so we fold through it. There aren't many useful references about the real NK accent is like so I received a lot of help from the NK language teacher that came down directly from NK.
Q. Do you have any line that you remember?
A. Basically, the speaking manner are peculiar, but if I could pick one it would be 'tap dancing sure make a person go crazy about it'. In our language it would be like "tap dancing is making a person crazy.." ah, that came out weirdly.
(t/n the korean words he use to express the NK and SK dialogue is different but the meaning of it is the same.)
Q. In the previous High Cut interview you said that "I connected with Director Kim Yonghwa (from with god movie) through our gaze.". Dir. Kim style is to let the actors acted naturally but with Dir. Kang, he is known for his detailed direction.
A. I also feel that way too. When I feel a scene is lacking something the director felt the same way too, and when I think a scene is okay the director gave an OK right away. Because the person who knows Roh Kisoo the best are director and me, I think we connected with each other in that part.
Q. Roh Kisoo's development is the main point of this movie. After this big movie ended, as an actor you must have felt a personal development too.
A. I feel like I'm developing alongside this Roh Kisoo character. Because I am Roh Kisoo. I learn a lot from Kisoo on making effort in order to overcome any kind of difficult situation. When I'm having difficulties about acting, I overcome it by talking with the director or solve it by thinking on my own.
Q. As soon as '100 Days Husband' ended you're having comeback with EXO's fifth album, and now you're promoting 'Swing Kids' too. It seems like you're busier than anyone else in the end of this year. Recently, is there anty moment where you feel of "ah, I'm receiving love from the public"?
A. I really feel it especially from the drama. Because the drama's result is greater that expected it's very surprising and it's making me happy these days.
Q. You're currently in the middle of EXO's activities right now. Even though you're using your real name during (acting) activities but unlike other idol actor you don't give the vibe of having to erase your idol image while acting. Is it because your confidence in acting?
A. Why should I do that? until now I never think to erase (the idol image) for once. It's just like, right now I'm entirely being in EXO.
Q. What are your plans for next year?
A. For next film, I don't know about it yet but in the meantime I'm going all in for EXO's activities. A concert is being planned. Rather than having a specific plan I'll just work hard towards the things that are in front of me now. Just like Roh Kisoo.
